US Saturn confident and will carry rival products for customers to ...

Disappointed with soft sales for the Saturn Aura, winner of the 2007 North American Car of the Year award, General Motors is embarking on a bold strategy: having Honda Accord and Toyota Camry models at U.S. Saturn dealers, so buyers can directly compare the rival brands.

"In that side-by-side comparison, we come out really well," Mark LaNeve, head of North American sales and marketing for General Motors, told CNNMoney.com.

Toyota, meanwhile, didn't seem worried. "I think we can stand up to the comparison," Toyota spokesman Wade Hoyt told CNNMoney.com.

"They talk down the competition all the time, so this is just taking it one step further."

Car shoppers will be able to test-drive the rival models at Saturn dealers, but, obviously, they will not be able to purchase them there should they prefer a rival product.

Ford Denies Plan To Sell Volvo - Update

(RTTNews) - Tuesday, Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker Ford Motor Co. (F | charts | news | PowerRating) said it was not in discussions to sell its Swedish unit Volvo to BMW or any other company. The company denied Swedish newspaper Goteborgs Posten reports, that said the company was aiming a sale of its Volvo brand to German carmaker BMW. The U.S. automaker in a statement said, "Ford Motor Company is not in discussions with BMW or any other company regarding an interest in the Volvo Car Corporation,"

While analysts see no urgent need for the automaker to rush into a sale, many feel that the company is burning cash and can remain open to such an option if they can get a good price for Volvo.

Tuesday, Wall Street Journal said though rumor of a sale has been making the rounds a sell-off might make some sense -- at first glance.

Three critically injured at I-35, I-37

Three motorists who stopped to change a tire were in critical condition Sunday after an oncoming vehicle spun out of control and struck them, police said.

The accident, which occurred around 1 p.m., forced temporary closure of the exit from Interstate 35 South to Interstate 37 South as officers investigated the incident.

A Chevy Tahoe, driven by a 56-year-old woman, had parked along the exit shoulder because one of its tires had blown out, said San Antonio Police Sgt. Michael Brown. Two men driving a red Ford Explorer stopped to assist the woman.

As all three stood behind the Tahoe, a green Honda Civic came around the curve in the road and somehow lost control, striking guardrails on both sides of the exit ramp.

The Civic then spun around, striking the three motorists and slamming into the rear of the Tahoe with its back bumper, Brown said.

Kirssi wins Prologue on HP2 Enduro

BMW Motorrad Motorsport team rider Simo Kirssi proved without question that he was the best rider up Erzberg's iron mountain this year when he recorded the fastest time in the Prologue, having already won the twin-cylinder class race two days previously. Finishing ahead of 2006 twin-cylinder class winner David Knight to win the 'Knigsklasse' event for the first time, Simo then recorded a best time of eight minutes 44 seconds to top the results of the Iron Road Prologue. In adding a winning performance in the Prologue to his twin-cylinder class victory Simo made it a perfect two from two for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team and their HP2 motorcycles at the 2007 Erzberg event. With the 500 fastest riders in the Prologue qualifying to start Sunday's Hare Scramble, Kirssi - although well aware that he would only be competing in the Hare Scramble for fun aboard his 1200cc HP2 Enduro - set about bettering the time that earned him victory in Thursday's twin-cylinder race.

Ford's End-of-Era Sale?

Jaguar is the preferred mode of transport for Britain's political and financial elite. Land Rover provides the nation's aristocratic set with wheels. But they have been poor performers for their owner, Ford Motor Co., which may be putting both iconic brands on the block.

Given the state of those brands, the U.S. car maker may have to settle for a less-than-luxurious price. Still, that's better than diverting precious management attention from more-pressing matters back home in Detroit.

Ford, which has hired investment bankers to evaluate options for Jaguar and Land Rover, doesn't break out results for either marque. This makes ...

Jobe's walkoff grand slam helps CHS finish off Blanchard

After giving up four runs in the third-inning roll, Lambeth held the Chicks off with six straight routine infield outs but he was running on fumes coming out for the sixth.

Josh Gresham hit him hard for a flyout to deep center then he plunked Braden Cook. He walked Dalton Shepherd then got Korey Keef to pop up for the second out.

But Chance Thomas and Tylor Lee killed him with back-to-back deep counts that they worked into back-to-back walks to load the bases and the Lions got out the hook.

Jobe was due. One of the best Chickasha clutch hitters had walked and grounded out twice so he was very due.

So he watched Stevens warm up and waited.

Once in the box, he got right to work, fouling off two fastballs as he looked for the right one.

It came in low, right in his power zone and it left the yard over the right-center field wall like a rocket.

More than 20000 PS3 units sold in Australia

Sony Australia has announced that more than 20,000 PlayStation 3 units have been sold in the territory since the console launched there on Friday.

According to TheAge.com, Sony also said that combined sales of hardware, software and accessories generated over AUD 25 million (GBP 10.3 million / EUR 15.2 million / USD 20.2 million) in retail spending.

The PS3 retails in Australia with an RRP of AUD 999.95. With 20,000 consoles sold, that would mean AUD 5 million has been spent on software and accessories. First-party games are priced at AUD 99.95.

Xbox 360 launched in the region exactly one year before PS3, on March 23 2006. According to market analyst GfK, 30,421 units were sold in the first four days following launch - making it the fastest-selling console then released.

Hard work, hard play equal success

Chief executive of TrayGames, an online multiplayer gaming community, Pantuso recently offered students at Upper Valley Joint Vocational School tips on designing video games 鈥?and a warning.

Don't assume that because you like playing games, you'll like designing them, Pantuso told students.

"It's kind of like going to work at a meat factory because you like to eat steak," he said.

A Washington Twp. resident, Pantuso, 37, grew up near Milwaukee. He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering but dropped out. At the time, he was working at PKWare, creator of the ZIP file format.

"After a while, I realized I was learning way more at work," Pantuso said.

He was also earning six figures at age 23, making tools to edit video games.

PS3 will be able to play 1800 PS2 games

Sony Computer Entertainment has launched an online list of old video game titles fans will be able to play on the soon-to-be-released Australian version of the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

The website at faq.eu.playstation.com/bc lists more than 1,800 PS2 titles that can be played on the PS3, about three quarters of the complete PS2 game catalogue.

The long-awaited gaming console launches in Australia, Europe and New Zealand on Friday, about five months after it was released in the United States and Japan.

Last month, SCE, the PS3's maker, said the Australasian and European regional models - which operate on the PAL regional television standard - would not feature the same level of "backward compatibility" that the US and Japanese versions do.

The software-hardware configuration of the PAL model means gamers will not be able to play as many titles from the PS2 on the PS3 as Japanese and US users, who can access almost all of the older games.

Two controversial proposals in budget

Making PAN the sole basis for investor identification and enhancing the threshold for TDS on interest from bank deposits are the two most investor friendly announcements in the budget for the financial sector. THIS TIME the Finance Minister's budget speech dwelt on some issues that had been doing the rounds earlier. The separation of the debt management function from the Reserve Bank of India and vesting it with an autonomous body functioning under the Government has been talked about since 2001. This model, in vogue in advanced countries, is meant to ensure that the RBI carries its core central banking function of monetary management unhindered by debt management issues. There is bound to be a transition period before the Government assumes the role. Many more announcements will be made and a roadmap drawn up.

Sports bar makes its move

SPRINGFIELD - McKay Investment Company may get a step closer to redeveloping its portion of the old Mohawk Shopping Center next Monday, but at least one business owner hasn't waited around to see if, or when, he will need to relocate.

Tom Nelson, owner of Tommy's Sports Bar & Grill - now at 1509 Mohawk Blvd., a couple of doors down from Bi-Mart - took the plunge earlier this year. He moved across the parking lot to the end of the shopping center owned by Cuddeback Investments Inc., where he revamped an old beauty parlor into a state-of-the-art beer-and-burger bar complete with 10 flat-screen plasma TVs and a 10-foot projection screen.

The move from the former Stepina's Bar and Grill location at nearby 1475 Mohawk Blvd. happened in near-record time - less than two months from start to finish - and cost $365,000, Nelson said.

Residents pay as incidents mount

Criminals in Jackson make off with $1.6 million in cash, cars and stolen merchandise every month.

That's the average amount the Jackson Police Department concludes is lost monthly in stolen cars, robberies, burglaries and thefts around the city. The figures are contained in monthly reports the city makes to the FBI and are twice the national per-capita average.

"That's an astounding number," said Tricia Raymond, executive director of the local crime watchdog group SafeCity. "That just kind of points to the fact that the criminals are getting smarter and they are following the money."

About half of that lost value comes from cars stolen in the city. On average, $700,000 worth of vehicles are stolen in Jackson every month.

Clinton resident Cyndi Stewart became part of that calculus when she pulled her car into a shopping center parking lot on Old Canton Road in Jackson on the afternoon of Oct.

Your car insurance rate can go down, if you shop

The typical American driver will pay less for auto insurance this year than in 2006, according to the Insurance Information Institute. This is the first decrease in insurance premiums since 1999.

But the average annual cost for car insurance is still a hefty $847 (it was $851 in 2006).

There are ways to bring down your costs:

• Shop around for insurance quotes. Get estimates from at least three places.

• Consider insurance costs when buying a car. Some cars just cost more to insure.

• See if buying your homeowners and auto insurance from the same company is cheaper.

• Raise your deductible. But be sure you can afford to pay it if you have an accident.

• Ask for discounts.

It was with a heavy heart that the striker greeted his former Hereford colleagues, just over an hour after he had set up current club Accrington Stanley's first back-to-back wins since September, and the first time the Reds had kept back-to-back clean sheets in League Two, with Peter Cavanagh wrapping things up in the second half with his second in as many games.

It was more sweet-bitter than bitter-sweet for Brown.

Everything about the outside of the venue screamed bush-league. Inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the more than 2,500 passionate fans who skipped Ohio State's NCAA Tournament men's basketball game saw a display of exciting football -- highlighted by a ton of big plays on offense.

``This is good football. This is entertainment,'' said former Loy Norrix and Michigan State running back Little John Flowers, now the Xplosion's main man in the backfield.

The Best: Get on a roll with Heelys

Have you ever been out somewhere and noticed a kid floating by? Maybe you even thought he was of the spirit world because his body was moving but his legs weren't. Well, you're not seeing a ghost. This weightless, floating effect is all in the shoes.

These shoes are actually cool skates called Heelys. They have wheels that are set deep into the sole of the shoe so that you can walk or skate, whichever you choose, whenever you choose. They're not only fun but really handy, especially when you want to get somewhere fast. When you want to walk, they're shoes; but if you get tired of walking, or just want to have some fun, you can skate.

Former La. Cop, Wife, Plead Not Guilty to Insurance Fraud

A former Shreveport, La., police officer and his wife have pleaded not guilty to charges arising from an allegedly altered police report.

Ronald Small and his wife, Tracey, entered the plea Mar. 12 in state district court in Caddo Parish.

They were arrested in January on one count each of felony insurance fraud and injuring public records. Authorities allege that Tracey Small's auto insurance had lapsed at the time of a Dec. 11, 2005, automobile accident, that she paid the premium soon after the accident and that the time on the accident report was changed to falsely indicate that she was covered when the accident happened.

Geico Insurance Co. contacted Shreveport police after becoming suspicious of inconsistencies during a claims investigation.

Japan's Vehicle Sales May Fall in 2007 on Truck Slump (Update2)

March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Vehicle sales in Japan, the world's third-largest auto market, may fall to a 23-year low next fiscal year as truck sales are expected to decline following a surge in demand triggered by new environmental rules.

Sales of cars, minicars, trucks and buses may drop 2 percent to 5.52 million vehicles in the 12 months starting April 1, from an estimated 5.63 million in the current business year, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said in a release today. Truck sales may fall 11 percent, leading the decline.

The drop in demand for commercial vehicles will add to a sales slump of passenger cars after consumer spending fell every month last year and automakers including Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. introduced fewer new models.

Religion, cartoons, and the law

Carsten Juste, the Danish newspaper editor who inflamed parts of the Muslim world by publishing 12 cartoons of the prophet Muhammad in September 2005, offered this mea culpa to The New York Times the following January: "If I had known that the lives of Danish soldiers and civilians would be threatened, if I had known that, as my finger hovered one centimeter above the send button for publishing the drawings, would I have hit it? No. No responsible editor would have done."

In fact, the consequences of pressing that button transcended mere threats: Beyond a fatwa on the cartoonists themselves, firings and even jailings of editors who chose to reprint their work, and the forced resignation of government ministers in Italy and Sweden, more than 100 people worldwide were killed in riots triggered by what some Islamic leaders called an outrage against their religion.

Mom and son weavers push the pedal to the wood in St. Elmo

But Beverly Crawford and her son Zach Crawford, 25, still are boldly going where few people bother to go these days by having two working looms parked in their St. Elmo living room. The warp turns out to be the name given to the rack of 336 parallel loom threads through which the Crawfords' nimble fingers shoot a 6-inch-long wooden boatlike object called a shuttle, which in turn trails material of many colors. Alternately throwing the shuttle from side to side while manipulating the threads by pushing on wooden pedals and then compressing the woven rows with something called a "beater bar," the loom devotees inch-out their intricately patterned material magic."It's just very relaxing," says Beverly Crawford, 51. "I really enjoy it." Her son nods in agreement. "And you can take out your frustrations on it," adds Zach Crawford, slamming the beater bar down with coupe de grace finality.
