Man convicted of killing three boys in Iowa dies in Alabama

DES MOINES (AP) — A man convicted of killing three teenagers in Des Moines 29 years ago died in prison in Alabama, authorities said.Daniel Munro was sentenced to life in prison for the 1978 slayings of Gerald Hoffman Jr., his brother, Jeff, and their friend, Jeff Beavers. They were shot to death while cleaning a building, and the case became known in Iowa as "Bloody Sunday." Police said robbery was the apparent motive.Munro died of a heart attack in a prison hospital last June, Alabama officials said.Iowa authorities said they checked Munro’s status last summer, and knew he was sick. Once they receive a death certificate "we will clean out his records," said Polk County Sheriff Dennis Anderson.Munro was convicted in 1968 in an attack on a shoe clerk in Mobile, Ala. He escaped from a prison work-release program in 1977.After being convicted of the killings in Des Moines, Munro was sent back to Alabama to finish his sentence there.
