PS3 will be able to play 1800 PS2 games
Sony Computer Entertainment has launched an online list of old video game titles fans will be able to play on the soon-to-be-released Australian version of the PlayStation 3 (PS3).
The website at faq.eu.playstation.com/bc lists more than 1,800 PS2 titles that can be played on the PS3, about three quarters of the complete PS2 game catalogue.
The long-awaited gaming console launches in Australia, Europe and New Zealand on Friday, about five months after it was released in the United States and Japan.
Last month, SCE, the PS3's maker, said the Australasian and European regional models - which operate on the PAL regional television standard - would not feature the same level of "backward compatibility" that the US and Japanese versions do.
The software-hardware configuration of the PAL model means gamers will not be able to play as many titles from the PS2 on the PS3 as Japanese and US users, who can access almost all of the older games.
